Chelsea In Bloom in London is taking place now. Fantastic free flower show for all ages !
The famous Chelsea Flower Show in London receives a lot of media coverage and thousands of visitors from around the world. But many people may not know that close to the gardens there are two more brilliant events held nearby at the same time.
Chelsea In Bloom is the secondary annual show but it deserves similar recognition and support. The florists and designers work for weeks planning what they are going to create for the organisers and/or the many shops and businesses that take part. Making the displays can also take several days.
'Flowers in Fashion'
This is the 20th year and it is from 19th May to 25th May. This year's theme is 'Flowers in Fashion.' This is significant because two women, Dame Mary Quant and Dame Vivienne Westwood launched their businesses from shops located on King's Road in Chelsea. They became famous icons and leaders in creative and innovative clothing designs.
The main locations to see the installations and window displays are Sloane Square, Sloane Street, Pavilion Road, King's Road and Duke of York Square. Children will be amazed when they see what can be made with flowers, plants and foliage.
One of the biggest, boldest and unmissable displays is the punk rocker's head. At over 3m tall, it has possibly the biggest and most colourful mohican haircut you will ever see. This creation is a tribute to Westwood and Malcolm McClaren. They were big influencers in punk rock music and he managed the controversial Sex Pistols.
The public spaces have large displays. See the horses and riding outfits at Sloane Square and a massive handbag at Duke of York Square.
Many varieties of flowers and plants to see
There are also displays inside and outside of many shops and hotels in the area, with over 100 companies involved this year. The designs have a wide variety of fresh flowers and plants and some may include artificial versions. With the high quality of some faux flowers and plants available now you may not notice what is not real...
This year the show will work with two charities. There are exclusive T shirts on sale and the profits will go to the British Fashion Council Foundation. People can also give donations. The money will help this charity educate and support workers in the fashion industry.
At the end of the show all the remaining fresh petals will be made in to confetti by The Confetti Club. The confetti will be sold and the money raised given to the Cancer Research UK charity.
Also see Belgravia In Bloom
When you have seen Chelsea In Bloom you can take a short journey to see Belgravia In Bloom. This runs for one extra day - from 19th May to 26th May.
This year's theme is 'Through the Seasons.' A smaller version of the show in Chelsea, it has some great installations and is also worth a visit.
The main streets to see the displays are Elizabeth Street, Eccleston Street, Eccleston Yards, Pimlico Road and Motcomb Street.
The event is supporting Horatio's Garden charity for a second year. They have made a nice floral display and it is located in Newson's Yard on Pimlico Road.
The charity helps people with spinal injuries. Gardens are created for patients in NHS spinal injury centres.
